ALIEF SUPER NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING
Minutes for Tuesday, June 22, 2010
Alief Super Neighborhood # 25 held its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, June 22nd,7:00 P.M. at the CenterPoint Energy Building, 12330 Bellaire Blvd.
PROGRAM:
Chairman, Barbara Quattro, called the meeting to order at 7:05 P.M. She requested that cell phones be turned off. Anne Williams, Secretary, placed a sign in sheet out for the Roll Call of council members. A quorum was not met til later in the meeting. (See attached.).
Hospitality: Hospitality was provided by the ASNC (left over from the Town Hall meeting in May).
INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS: State Representative, the Honorable Hubert Vo; Catherin Le (Al Green’s Office); Shen Gao (City of Houston); Veronica Hernandez (City of Houston Mayor’s office); Melissa Arredondo (Councilman Costello’s office); Harris County Commissioner Steve Radack and Mark Fury (Harris County Precinct Three); Leawood Subdivision and House of Amos representatives attended.
MOTIONS MADE:
1. Marie Lee motioned to approve the May minutes. Seconded Louis Stoerner. Council voted, motion passed.
2. Anne Williams motioned: to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Brian Burks. Council voted, motion passed.
COMMITTEE & STANDING REPORTS –
CHAIRS REPORT –Barbara Quattro stated that she, as Chairperson of the Alief SNC, is also a member of the Super Neighborhood Alliance. She attended a meeting last night. One item that came up was neighborhood grants. Marie Lee said she has written grants before and Anne Williams took a short seminar on grant writing.
TREASURER’S REPORT –Monique Pham, Treasurer, was absent from the meeting.
ELECTIONS/NOMINATING COMMITTEE.
SECURITY/ INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT DISTRICT:-Brian Burks reminded everyone that the IMD will be opening new office at 11360 Bellaire, Ste. 960 with police presence. This office at the Universal Shopping Center was donated by Representative Vo for the next five years. Karen Loper announced that the IMD will host a recycling event at Crump Stadium parking lot July 24th. They will have paper shredders and will accept electronics. As further information becomes available, she will send out emails.
ALIEF COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION –Mike Kreinsen was absent. Marie Lee announced dates of upcoming events (see below)

NEW BUSINESS
Steve Radack, Harris County Commissioner. Mr. Radack spoke about the roles of the county vs. the city and METRO. Mr. Radack agreed (for the present time) to maintain the old Alief cemetery until redistricting or other political events prevent him from doing so. He mentioned the new clinic that Harris County built on Boone Road and various parks as well as encouraging Alief residents to urge the city to answer their needs as City of Houston residents. He provided a handout map of Harris County service and recreation facilities. There was a discussion of the mowing of the right of ways along the Westpark tollroad. Mr. Radack answered questions from the floor. He can be reached at 713-755-6306.
Sherwin Sun, Chinese Community Center Mr. Sun spoke about the services currently being offered to all people at the center. The specific services he discussed were the financial, career, and housing education classes leading to self sufficiency. He noted that several different languages are spoken by the counselors. He introduced the counselors (Orfelinda Coronado, Ka Man, and Colleen McKinney) and handed out flyers which further explains the program. There will be an orientation meeting July 8th. The Chinese Community Center is located on Town Park Drive.
UPCOMING SPEAKERS – The July meeting will be devoted to the various medical facilities which serve our area. The venue and refreshments will be provided by West Houston Medical Center. This has been an annual event. In August?September?, Barbara hopes to partner with the HCC’s third annual festival on the 18th
PUBLIC SESSION
Public Session and Announcements.
The next quarterly small business breakfast meeting will be August 3rd at 7:30 am at the International Trade Center Building, 11110 Bellaire
The third annual parade will be on September 25th at 9:00 am and the grand Marshall will be Sherriff Adrian Garcia
The SAVE Alief annual Health Fair will be held Saturday, August 7th at 9:00 AM at the Hastings Ninth Grade Center. The next planning meeting will be held June 24th at 4:00 PM at Crump Stadium
The Houston Community College will be hosting a festival at their location in Alief on Hayes Road in August (or is it Sept 24th?).
Honor a Veteran in Alief luncheon will be held July 8th from 10:00AM-2:00PM in the Chapel of Eternal Peace at the Forest Park Cemetery on Dairy Ashford.
The House of Amos on Boone Road provides voter registration every Saturday
RENEW Houston is attempting to get petitions signed in order to get on the November ballot. The group wants a special fund set up for flooding and drainage issues in the Houston area.
Neighborhood protection will be moved from under the police department to another department not yet announced.
The next ASNC meeting will be held at 7:00 P.M. on the fourth Tuesday July 27th, at the West Houston Medical Center, Richmond Ave. The meeting adjourned at 8:40 PM.
