ACA will meet Sept 17, at Alief Community Park to plan the Sat. 9/22 Cemetery Work Day. In October they are planning another Bingo Night fundraiser. All are invited to these three activities.
c. ASNC PUBLICITY – Michael has requested that Karen Lievre (Youth Services Representative) prepare a proposal to the ASN Council for spending up to $500 on publicity in order to get more people to attend the meetings, contribute topical input, learn ASNC functions, and get involved in volunteer projects.
GUEST SPEAKERS:
TIFFANY CARRETHERS – gave a short update on the progress of the county B3 Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program. Over 100 teens have completed the program at 6 different sites throughout the Alief area. September 1 starts a new grant money period and they are looking for more sites. Teens that complete the program will have an opportunity to win a laptop computer.
HOUSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY – Our scheduled speakers from the library administration were unable to attend, due to flooding in the downtown and other areas of the city. Therefore, our former and current local Henington-Alief Branch Library managers, Rebecca Hubert and Shammi Gil, spoke. They discussed the renovation of the Central downtown branch; World Language Collections at all branches; as well as the many programs at our local branch. We have 15 new laptops available, story and movie times, ESL and tutoring are also offered.
OLD BUSINESS
BOONE ROAD PARK – Paul Fikac reported that the park renovations are almost complete. People are able to use the park again, and it has been busy. They have completed the track renovations, new parking lot, and volley ball courts. Trees (with irrigation) will be planted next.
NEW BUSINESS
HIGHWAY 6 OVERPASS RESOLUTION – TX State Representative, Hubert Vo reported that 4 years ago TXDOT proposed 2 overpasses on Highway 6 (at Bellaire and at Westheimer). Since many of the homeowners and businesses and near those intersections are very upset about the potential loss to their neighborhoods and livelihoods. Rep. Vo has been working to help TXDOT formulate other plans for area safety. However, pleas for improvements similar to those on Westheimer which involve building medians and allowing only right turns from businesses have fallen on deaf ears. On Friday, August 24 the HOUSTON-GALVESTON AREA COUNCIL voted not to approve the TXDOT plans and wants to see the results of a current study.
Therefore, Representative Vo requested that the ALIEF SUPER NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL adopt a Resolution against the proposed overpasses. After much discussion, it was unanimously passed. (See page 3 of the minutes)
CANDIDATE’S FORUM – for the September meeting. Barbara Quattro has invited city council candidates. (UPDATE: AISD candidates will also be invited).
PUBLIC SESSION
Both Danny Nguyen and Chet Machen invited all to the Vietnamese American Chamber of Commerce Luncheon on Thursday, August 30 at the Kim Son Restaurant at the Fountains on Highway 59.
The next ASNC meeting will be held at 7:00 P.M. on the fourth Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at the CenterPoint Energy Building, 12330 Bellaire Blvd.
The meeting adjourned at 8:45 P.M.
