Meeting Minutes for May 25, 2021
The regularly scheduled meeting was convened at 6:32 pm by Chair Barbara Quattro via Zoommeeting. Board members present were Ms. Quattro, Co-Vice Chairs Alan Steinburg and Diana Cavazos, Doug Smith, Treasurer and Cynthia Young, Secretary.
Motion made and carried to accept the April meeting minutes.
HPD Representatives: Asst Chief Yasar Bashier, Cmdr. David Angelo, Officer Tim Whitaker, Lt. TimTrometer and Lt. Jonathan Lui with Westside Command.
Houston Police Department Report: Westside Command Center crime statistics for the Alief areawere presented by Officer Tim Whitaker and Cmdr David Angelo. Asst Chief Yasar Bashier was introduced to the community and advised he is head of five patrol divisions.
\Murders are out of control in our area. Most are gang related. Percentages are up and are 35-37%higher than city wide average. The new Assistant Chief has an action plan within the division and the Harris County District Attorney’s office.
Statistical Summary:
- Violent crime down 2%
- Sexual Assault down 47%
- Burglary of Homes down 44%
- Burglary of Buildings up 47%
- Burglary of Vehicles down 22%
According to HPD, people are being followed home and then attacked once they enter theirdriveway. It was recommended that driver check their rearview mirror for any suspicious vehicle. HPD also advised attendees to record serial numbers of the high ticket items in their homes and/or put personal ID information on items so they can be identified if items are recovered.
Treasury Report: Doug Smith announced we have $9,006.22 in our account. We have a $5,000 checkissued by Nature’s Path as a grant for the Garden Pollinator project.
Guests Program Speakers: Lawrence Bell, Commissioner Tom Ramsey’s Office, Dwight Boykins andYolanda Alvarado with District Attorney Kim Ogg’s Office, Veronica Hernandez, Mayor’s Citizens’ Assistance Office, and Na’Shon Edwards, District F CM Tiffany Thomas office.
Program Speakers:
Dwight Boykins – Mr. Boykin announced that there are a lot of individuals that are scamming theseniors in our community. He is working closely with the second chance program.
Yolanda Alvarado – There will be billboards popping up throughout the city supporting hand gun safety and proper storage. Due to COVID, the court system is backed up and she has requested that we all honor any jury summons.
Veronica Hernandez – Discussed the trash delay throughout the city. She provided her contactinformation to notify her if someone has been affected.
Lawrence Bell – Commissioner Tom Ramsey’s office will send out a survey regarding the requested Senior Center and year-round pool. Funding is continuing on the COVID 19 relief.
Na’Shon Edwards – Announced that team member Long Nguyen resigned and the office wishes himthe best in his new endeavors. Going forward, Mr. Edwards requested that all attendees send emails to Na’Shonedwards@HoustonTx.gov as he will be handling all f District F issues.

Cathy Johnson with Power by the People a nonprofit org is promoting increasing voter registration.
